On Olbermann’s “corporatocracy”

Posted By admin On 23. January 2010 @ 15:49 In politics | No Comments

Earlier this week, the US [1] Supreme Court ruled that corporations have the right to constitutional liberties, since they are run by individuals with rights protected by the US constitution (most notably freedom of political speech and the right to organize their candidates for election).  The immediate response by left-wing news stations was one of horror and disgust, with the likes of Keith Olbermann [2] even saying that–now that corporations have constitutional access to their own funding and consciences–every conceivable science-fiction political nightmare is now possible.  Here are fourteen of the horrors Keith described, ranging anywhere from hilarious to beneficial (the latter type being obvious for those who appreciate the laws of God, and at the very least frown upon the injustices of Marxism):

1) In ten years, every politician in the US would be a corporate prostitute

2) the existence of unions (editor’s note: the organizations responsible for both a) changes in the taxation of health care plans which [3] taxed 40% for non-union members, and b) for [4] the collapse of our auto and manufacturing industries) would be threatened

3) taxation would become flat, and government spending will decrease

4) welfare payments, which are [5] directly correlated with violent crime and child-abandonment, would be severely reduced

5) The American public will suddenly love going to war because conflicts make great television

6)  The corporate attitude toward diversity will suddenly disappear, and same-sex marriage/abortion will be banned

7) Evolution will stop being taught, because corporations are hell-bent on Jesus

8) The Pope will suddenly be elected president and preside over a new Spanish Inquisition, since the separation of church and state will “obviously” end now that [6] gay-parade Pepsi can fund candidates

9) Blacks and Hispanics will be blamed for reductions in government welfare just like they always are (Note to Olbermann: huh?)

10)  The TEA party will be banned after they and the New World Corporatocracy lower spending

11) Obama’s “important” bank reforms–which addressed [7] none of the underlying causes of the sub-prime crisis–will be rolled back.

12) Freedom of speech will disappear, because Sarah Palin the fascist is going to wink us out of the first amendment.  The news stations will only tell us how wonderful life is, because happy news is the most popular news, and it will make money.

13) Elected officials will be 99.9% backed by corporate funding

14)  History books could very well disappear

Now, aside from the fact that half of these scenarios provide Americans with drastically necessary reforms, what Keith forgot to mention is that corporations already “own” even our most liberal politicians.  To prove this, the reader only need look to a man who promised to fight the corporation: President Obama.  Since becoming elected, Obama’s policies have resulted in

1) big banks borrowing money [8] without interest (also known as “free”) from the Federal Reserve

2) auto corporations getting [9] billions of taxpayer dollars through cash-for-clunkers, while [10] increasing the prices of used-cars and getting the public into debt

3) corporate giants merging, instead of breaking financial trusts up

What he promised to do was [11] keep lobbyists out of the White House and [12] promote transparency, what he did was [13] invite the lobbyists in and keep major corporate deals–ones involving your medical care–[14] behind closed doors.  What [15] he promised was to not accept contributions from coprorations, what he did was accept mostly corporate gifts.

For instance, a quick look at [16] his top contributors shows that the overwhelming majority were already corporations.   Excluding universities and the US government (which are also powerful organizations worth monitoring), what we find is that Obama’s coffers were filled by the likes of huge international banks such as UBS and Goldman Sachs alongside giants such as General Electric, Microsoft, and Time Warner. Take all the time you like, but you will not find the Citizens of Main Street mentioned anywhere.  And this is from the Senate’s most liberal (meaning: anti-market) senator.

Of course, many will argue that this is beside the point.  Corporations before this Supreme Court ruling were required to organize money through less direct means (oftentimes by engaging in fund-raising), and contributions were restricted to a certain amount, which kept one group from dominating the playing field.  Now, liberals will argue, this small amount of fairness is gone.  Money will flood the coffers of corrupt politicians, and more funding will keep the populace from learning about it.

But the truth is that there is one thing more dangerous than corporate power, and it’s an organization which can legitimately dispense violence–like the government–and has no respect for law.  As long as we are a nation governed by law, we must respect our constitutionally-derived right to address the government and the right to speak our consciences, regardless of whether an organization exists for the purpose of business or not.  These rights are given to protect our citizens from overbearing leadership: and if we are so careless a people that we would discard our rights out of fear, then our tyrants have already arrived.

Americans must also realize that until this point, people who organized in groups were severely and [17] unconstitutionally restricted in regard to their political and moral organization, and now–gratefully–less of them are.  But we have to recognize that all freedoms are accompanied by the requirement of an active and moral citizenry.  The cause of liberty necessitates a searching and sober eye, and the citizen who thinks his freedom unworthy of his time and attention will not have it for long, nor does he deserve to.

As such, there is a reason for vigilance, just as there always has been.  Here are some plans to ensure liberty in the days ahead:

1) ensure [18] net neutrality to keep our active citizenry informed (see p.3 of this link)

2) continue personal funding for [19] sites which monitor contributions and corporate connections

3) ensure transparency in government: no back-room deals on peacetime/non-safety-related legislation

4) ensure that in a corporation, the board of directors is personally responsible for bankruptcies and crimes of the corporation.  A member of the board can always quit before an immoral decision is made

5) If you are worried about the education of our children being compromised by corporate interference, get rid of the Department of Education and allow local school boards to regulate themselves.    Colleges will quickly determine which schools make good students
